"Using the Avenue of Medicine to Minister the Gospel of Jesus"

Dear Friends & Family,

We thank God for what He is doing in Nigeria. It was a special treat this trip as our whole family traveled to Owerri, Nigeria in June for 1 month. We were surprised that the mission hospital staff had waited until our arrival to put on a "12th Anniversary Celebration" for the 12 years since the inception of the mission hospital while we were living there in 1988. It was good to see many of the faces we had contact with and assistance from during those pioneering years. It was good to reflect on all the things that have been accomplished since that time. We were very blessed to have had Drs. Haywood Robinson & Noreen Johnson, as well as a colleague of Dr. Johnson's from CA, Dr. Gail Jackson and their daughters. They assisted in many medical areas during their stay and truly added their expertise in surgery to the difficult cases we were faced with. They touched the lives of many during their stay.

Amy Sell, who is starting her 2nd year of Medical School in CA, came out for 3 weeks to do several needed HIV/AIDS awareness seminars that were very informative. They project that about 10% of the country of Nigeria is now HIV positive, with some states as much as 40% positive. Please pray for us as we are praying about more effective way's to minister to this increasing need in Nigeria and Africa in general. Amy was also very active in our ICH surgical cases as well. Jessica Mitrovich came with Amy to minister to children and help the children's ministries of the outreach churches.

Our lives were enriched to have them be a part. We also came with 4 women from our home church; Chris Threadgill - a graduate from our church's missions school who is doing a wonderful job helping with the hospital administration and village outreaches. She will be staying in Nigeria for 6 months. Pray for her and if you would like to support her let us know. We also had Sara Wurbs - a pre-med student from Texas A & M, Mandy Rodgers - an education major from Texas A & M, and Tracy Drost - a veterinary med student from Texas A & M. We are so proud to be in a church that has a vision for missions and people who are willing to go & serve. These ladies all did a wonderful job, both in the hospital and in using their gifts and talents in surrounding Churches. We were so blessed to have them along. Another member of our church Dr. Rick Rigsby was there 3 weeks earlier to be the commencement speaker at the Bible College graduation and enjoy their 15th year anniversary. We heard many glowing reports that he did a wonderful job. Dr. Casmir Ihegworo is doing a tremendous job overseeing these ministries. We are eternally grateful to him and his new fiancé Ifeoma. We were honored to have Dr. & Mrs. Harold Harder visit us for 5 day's as he had been very helpful in getting needed medicines to our hospital and many others throughout the world through their ministry - Blessings International of Tulsa, OK.

During our stay we did over 20 surgical cases and saw up to 80 patients a day. We thank God for the ICH staff and doctors who continue the work and minister during our absence. Our boy's were busy chasing lizards and acquainting themselves with everyone on the compound. There was never a dull moment when the 3 Quartemont boy's were around. Cortlan (our youngest) was playing with an exam table when he hit his head and I had to place a few stitches in it. He also came down with Malaria & dysentery which were successfully whipped, thanks to God. Landan our 6 year old, scraped up knees, elbows, & head while chasing lizards and trying to carry Cortlan on his back. Stefan our 8 year old, got blisters on his hands from climbing on the laundry poles. He was also most interested in medicine as he came on rounds and watched in surgery and actually assisted in a few minor cases while we were there. Interested in surgery, he began to dissect all the lizards he caught with the oversight from his father and resident veterinarian Tracy. Velvet was busy preparing wonderful meals at the lovely mission house (that Casmir spent many hours setting up) as well as keeping up with our boy's and other visitors. She and others were very helpful in arranging all the medicines that we successfully got into the country, (PTL)! We appreciate those who prayed.

We also visited many churches while there and many came to know Christ. And had healings and deliverance as well. One meeting I was preaching at, had several psychiatric patients chained to a post of the church so they would not run away and hurt themselves or others (very few psychiatric hospitals there). When I gave the alter call for healing - they were instantly in their right mind and asked the usher to release them so they could come up for prayer, which they did and gave testimony to the rejoicing of the saints.

We thank God for every opportunity to serve Him and see Him do wonderful things. I plan to be in Nigeria again in November with another team of medical doctors. Pray about coming or assisting in any way. We are still laboring to send out this 40-foot container of medical supplies. Pray that this will be done soon. Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated and should be made payable to M.M.I.

Your brother in Christ,

Stuart R. Quartemont, M.D.

The hospital and Bible College are growing so fast that we are now looking to purchase the land next to us for $20,000 and build a new hospital for about $300,000. Pray that God will supply the necessary funds to do His work. We have another 40-foot container of medical supplies ready to ship this month. Please pray that God will give us favor at the port in clearing. Please contact us as soon as possible.
