Mission News - April 2000
We had four days of medical clinics (with 7 doctors seeing over 4000 people) and nightly crusades that brought
over 3,900 people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We had a memorable first night as storm clouds
moved in at the start of the crusade, and were supernaturally pushed back, not allowing rain to spoil the first
night of the crusade. When God displayed His power over the elements, over 1000 people came to know
Christ that night. On the final day of the outreach we were able to meet with village Chiefs, who not only
committed their lives to Christ, but also committed the future of this village into the hands of Jesus. God
moved on one of the Chiefs to give us 10 acres of land to build a church, parsonage, and satellite clinic as an
outreach of the Bible college and hospital ministries. We thank God for all of you who have been faithful to
sow into this work, especially Pastor David & Debbie Sell, who have been instrumental in connecting people to
African Christian Nationals of Pleasanton, CA, which has been working in a supportive role like M.M.I. God
is truly doing great things in these last days. A Muslim uprising in Nigeria had the whole country on alert when
we came in and the whole country was without electricity for over a week during our stay. Many Muslims and
Christians were killed in riots that broke out just prior to our coming. We thank all of you who were praying
for us during this trip, especially as we made our way through customs with 24 bags of luggage (10 bags full of
medicine). All of it arrived safely at the mission hospital where it was put to good use. We did surgery and
patient rounds in the mornings, and saw outpatients throughout the afternoons. Some evenings and weekends
we ministered in local churches and fellowships, seeing God do many good things. Please pray that we will get the 40-foot container of medical supplies off to Nigeria soon. We're looking
forward to another trip to Nigeria in June, which Velvet and our three sons will join. We're planning our next
trip to Mexico in September. We appreciate your prayer and financial support for these endeavors, and pray
you are also blessed in your kingdom efforts. Anyone wanting to join us on either trip, please let us know as
soon as possible. If your address has changed, if you would like to be deleted from this mailing list, or if you
would like to receive your copy of the MMI newsletter's via e-mail, please drop us a note or e-mail us at the
following address: mmivelvet@juno.com. Any contributions should be mailed to the address listed above.
Thanks for your concern. In His love & service, "Using the avenue of medicine to minister the gospel of Jesus!"
We rejoice at all God has done through this ministry! March 2000 will be a month to remember and reflect on
for years to come. We were fortunate to lead graduates from the Aldersgate School of World Mission on a 4
week mission trip to Nigeria, to complete their training for the school. I always talk about how much I love to
take people on their first mission trip, because God always does something special. West African Advanced
School of Theology and International Christian Hospital (our hospital & Bible College affiliation in Nigeria)
had their annual combined mission outreach while we were in Nigeria. As our ministry focus, the committee
selected the village of Egbu Etche, located about 1 1/2 hours drive from Owerri - deep in the bush. This
village was known for its devotion to cultic worship and resistance to the gospel. This was the first time
"white" people had ever been known to visit that village, and God used it to draw the people's attention to
Him.
