By this time (over 1 week into the project), the contracted drillers were manually chugging along the 24-inch diameter well at about 55 feet depth. The well cuttings were quickly forming a massive mound and showed varied soil colors.
We would visit the well site from time to time on different days to encourage the drillers, provide money for what was necessary for them to continue to make progress, and then share our faith and lifestyle with the native dwellers in various parts of the village. These included some burial ceremony gatherings. We had the opportunity of visiting with the Traditional Ruler, Eze Oliver Iriele, Duruoshimiri V of Ogberuru where we presented the community with 2 of the 10 donated computers from All Nations Church in League City (Dr. Larry & Linda Garza, Pastors). We went to Port Harcout (PH) twice to meet Dr. Samson Otuwa who arrived on the 21st and to pick up a hand-carried travel document for one of our team members, including additional operating funds. Our P.H. trip turned out to be the scariest for team members since our driver got lost on the way back to Aba that night. He was looking for better road when he diverted off the main P.H. – Aba expressway to avoid the damaged portions of the road. We were using a Mercedes Benz car from Dr. & Mrs. Charles Ikeji of Divine Grace Hospital. We eventually discovered the driver was neither familiar with the roads, nor was he an experienced road worrior for such Nigerian roads. We eventually made it safely to Aba and resolved not to take any further night journeys. Overall, we visited several villages, cities and states covering about 2000 miles. These include Ogberuru, Amaigbo, Orlu, Owerri, Aba, P.H. Benin, Onitsha, Lagos, Abuja, Jos, Bauchi, and Yankari to the National Wildlife Safari and Game Reserve. The Results |
